Philander Steward (he/him) serves as a technical assistance provider for the California Center for School Climate.
As a Senior Program Associate in WestEd’s Resilient and Healthy Schools and Communities (RHSC) area, Philander provides coaching, training, and technical assistance to improve school climate and wellness. Currently, he supports the California Center for School Climate as a technical assistance provider and facilitates a school climate data use community of practice for 10 local agencies in California. Philander joins WestEd with more than 17 years of experience in education. Most recently, he served as an assistant principal and helped to lead efforts at an elementary school in the areas of multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and equitable practices. He has experience as a middle school teacher, and a teacher on special assignment focusing on supporting district wide initiatives in MTSS, social and emotional learning and the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports. He provided training in Restorative Practices, and prepared professional development at the district, and site levels. He was also a team member for a recognized California State Model School Attendance Review Board (SARB) program to reduce chronic absence.
